Tools and Machines Used in Woodworking

Lathe

You’d use a wood lathe in the same way you’d use a regular one. Except here you have a piece of wood and the process of working that piece with a lathe is known as woodturning. You can find lathe woodworking equipment at most woodworking stores as they are quite commonly used to shape wood.

Planer

A tool that’s quite specific to woodworking is a planer. A planer can be either an electric one or one that you operate by hand. The latter is not as efficient or as easy to use as the former since it relies entirely on your input. An electric planer, on the other hand, is able to provide a flat finish to large wooden surfaces in a short period of time.

Nail Gun

While nail guns are used in more applications than just woodworking, they’re still an essential part of it. As you’d expect you’d use a nail gun to join large wooden pieces together. If you’re working on small projects and you need to hammer down only a handful of nails, then a nail gun is going to be overkill.

Saws

The next most important woodworking tools are saws. The most commonly used ones in woodworking are jigsaws, band saws, table saws and circular saws. Without even one of these saws, you won’t be able to finish your woodworking project no matter how simple it is. That’s how important they are.

Sander

Just like saws, sanders are found in different versions and multiple types of sanders are used in woodworking too. These involve handheld sanders, disc sanders, spindle sanders and belt sanders. Each one of them is used in a certain manner and for a specific task, you can’t just use any sander you want.

Mortiser

When you need to make holes in your workpiece with different shapes,  you need a mortiser. This piece of woodworking equipment is typically powered by electricity, and it also comes in a smaller form which is known as a chisel mortise.

Shaper

Shapers or spindle molders are stationary woodworking machinery used to mill profiles on wood stock. The stock is fed into the machine and the spindle either lowers or raises what is known as a cutter head. These wood machines for sale are known to operate at a rate from 3,000 to 10,000 RPM.

Drill Press

A drill press is a stationary woodworking machine too but instead of cutting wood stock, it helps you make holes in individual workpieces. There is another type of drill press called a benchtop drill press which you can mount on different workbenches instead of having it in one place all the time.

Drill

Having a regular drill in your woodworking shop is always a good idea. Unlike a drill press, you can move around a regular drill wherever there’s a power outlet. Some are battery-powered so you can move around without tripping over or being limited by the length of a cord.

Grinder

Grinders as a whole are used in various industries, but in woodworking, they are not as well known. Although every woodworker needs at least an angle grinder in their shop, you can also find use of blade and benchtop grinders. Sharpening and shaping wood with a grinder is quite easy.

Router

One of the most versatile tools in woodworking is a router. A router is used to make rabbets, cutouts, sharp edges, joints, cure dadoes and make decorative surface cuts. This is thanks to the flat plane of a wood router which works together with a rotating shaft that comes out of the bottom of the tool.

Tenoning Machine

As you’d expect a tenoning machine is used to make tenons. You can fit these tenons into mortises in order to make tenon and mortise joints. An advantage of having this woodworking machinery is that it can produce multiple tenons in multiple batches.

You can also use a tenoning machine to create different styles of tenons. There are also two categories of tenoning machines known as single and double-ended tenoners. These differ from each other by the number of motors, and cutter heads, as well as the HP, length and diameters they come with.
